How does it work?
Smooth-Sil™ Platinum Silicones cure at room temperature with negligible shrinkage. With different hardnesses to choose from, Smooth-Sil™ products offer tremendous versatility and are suitable for making production moulds of any configuration, large or small. These silicones exhibit good chemical, abrasion and heat resistance. Materials such as plasters, concrete, wax, low-melt metal alloys or resins (urethane, epoxy or polyester) can then be cast into these silicone rubbers without a release agent.
Smooth-Sil™ Platinum Silicones are used for rapid prototyping, wax casting (foundries and candle makers), architectural restoration and for casting concrete. Smooth-Sil™ 960 is suitable for food related applications.
Smooth-Sil 960 is a Shore 60A platinum cure silicone rubber designed for tough production moulds where firmness, heat resistance and long life are important. Compared to many other 60A silicones it has relatively low viscosity, so it is easier to mix, de-air and pour into detailed mould boxes.
Smooth-Sil 960 cures in about 16 hours at room temperature with negligible shrinkage to a firm, high strength rubber. It offers good chemical, abrasion and heat resistance, which makes it a strong choice for casting resins, concrete and low melt alloys into the same mould over and over.
Smooth-Sil 960 is also suitable for food related applications when processed and post cured according to the Smooth-On food safe instructions, and complies with 21 CFR 177.2600 for rubber articles intended for repeated food contact. Always follow the separate food grade bulletin before using any mould for chocolate, baking or other edible projects.

FAQ
Is Smooth-Sil 960 food safe?
Yes. Smooth-Sil 960 is one of the Smooth-On platinum silicones that is suitable for food related applications when mixed, cured and post cured according to the food grade processing instructions. It has been tested by an independent laboratory to comply with 21 CFR 177.2600 for rubber articles intended for repeated food contact.
What is the working time and cure time?
At around 23 °C, Smooth-Sil 960 has a pot life of about 45 minutes and cures in roughly 16 hours. Cooler temperatures will slow the cure, warmer conditions will speed it up.
What can I cast into Smooth-Sil 960?
You can cast polyurethane, epoxy and polyester resins, concrete, wax and low melt metal alloys into Smooth-Sil 960 moulds. The cured rubber offers good chemical, abrasion and heat resistance, which is ideal for demanding production work.
How firm is Smooth-Sil 960 compared to other silicones?
Smooth-Sil 960 is a Shore 60A silicone, so it is significantly firmer than most general mould making silicones. This extra stiffness helps moulds keep their shape under load, which is useful for heavy resin pours, concrete and metal casting.
